  1. It’s interesting to see how much IT effects everything now. After I read this article, I realized that I really did have any idea. I would have never guessed that Rue 21 would have a paid internship for students that requires extensive computer skills and knowledge. I see Rue 21 as a clothing store. I never thought about the IT skills behind the promotions or advertisements. I guess, you learn something knew everyday.

  2. This would be a great internship to do as a way to get experience in the working world. Many of the computer programs they list that the person would gain knowledge in from the internship are widely used. The information gained would be very helpful. Access or some sort of database system may even be used for the tracking of problems and making the daily operations status reports. I think this would be a fun internship to do as it links together fashion and technology making it an interesting job to do. This just shows how many companies are looking for people with an IT background, even in the Pittsburgh area.

  3. This posting proves just how much IT in general and databases in particular are pervading our job markets. As Christy says in her comment above, who would have thought a job at somewhere like RUE 21 would require and utilize extensive skills and training with Access, POS systems, and other tech. We tend to think of that kind of job being minimal thought, mostly just checking out people as they purchase clothes, but there is a surprising amount of IT background required for that store to function properly. Perhaps there are other jobs that we similarly don’t think about with IT working in the background. I certainly never would have placed RUE 21 as one.

  4. This employment advertisement for “Help Desk Internship” really smacks home at the IT skills required in today’s world to address business IS functions. The “Help Desk” job skills of today are greatly expanded from the help desk field of address from as little as 5 years ago.

In particular, RUE 21 it would appear, that their need for a suitable intern requires an understanding of the many minor IT Apps such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, and the more advanced tools such as Access, Excel, and POS software. The fact that RUE is looking for a candidate recently graduated or currently enrolled in an IT or related field, is an indication of the current status of knowledge requirements and interests of the individual they, as well as other potential employers, are seeking.

Real world applications can vary considerably from lab practice and assignments received through courses and curriculums from post secondary education. However; these IT/IS curriculums do provide excellent exposure and hands on experience that otherwise would be difficult to learn on your own or on the job. Education is a vital tool and in preparing the student for current IT employment opportunities. And now days Help Desk positions provide the experience and transition, through exposure, to many higher level IT positions.

For me, Microsoft Access has not been without its challenges. Many aspects of it could only be learned and discovered through trial and error. But I am all the wiser and knowledgeable having the fortunate opportunity and exposure to learn and understand this unique business APP.

In my current occupation I can see many instances where instead of creating a massive database through Excel, Access could have been applied. Which in-turn would have saved time and sanity, in providing only the needed information instead of a lengthy, and often times confusing Excel compilation.

  5. I think the It150 class is a good class. I think that the things that you learn in this class can be transferered into the business world. Learning how to work the access system can only help boost your skills. I think it will also give a little more strength to your resume.
